TOM DICK OR HARRY

Set in Johannesburg in 1937, ‘Tom Dick or Harry’ is inspired by the true life story of a fascinating South African woman - wife, mother and prostitute. The production, combines the talents of leading physical theatre exponent, Helen Iskander (director of Black and Blue, Two for the Price of One, Baobabs Don't Grow Here and Jutro), actor and voice artist, Gretha Brazelle (Naai) - and Naledi award-winning comedy actor Ben Voss (Black Mamba)

Hester (aka Kitty) finds herself in a world she has chosen, but cannot control. Married and pregnant she ventures to the city from a drought stricken farm, with a nuggety resolution to improve her life. Bringing dreams of grandeur and visions of riches, she and her husband, Bertie, arrive at the door of their one bedroom house on the dusty streets of Turffontein. It is here that her brazen adventures of sex, lies, love and loyalty truly begin. The incongruous mix of her candid naiveté and her insatiable appetite for wealth, become the catalyst for a ticking time bomb.

With a husband who loves her and a child who needs her, she finds herself drawn to the potential riches of Johannesburg's burgeoning prostitution industry. From Butlers to Businessmen and Barmen to Bankers she trades pleasures for pounds on the platforms of Jo'burg's bustling station. The staleness of the old gives way to the sparkle of the new and her life kicks into double time as she begins to lead a double life: Prostitution by day; mother and wife by night.

Estranged from her husband and dazzled by riches, she finds herself drawn to Jack. He is, a charming, dapper and thoroughly irresistible auctioneer of antiques and an incurable cad - with a secret of his own. As her wealth grows and the law closes in, her dreams of a better life become more determined. Tom, Dick or Harry explores the chaos of human fragility when the lives of three very different people collide… and as the cliché goes…three's a crowd!

The production has been supported by the NAC, BASA and Picture Tree.
